Four members of the BikeBoatBoot team, Paul, Anthony, James and Matt, were invited to see Cardiff City play Sunderland at the Cardiff City Stadium. Despite the result, it was a great day and we wish to thank Cardiff City for inviting us. At half-time, Anthony Boggis was interviewed and talked about the challenge and his son Rhys. There was also an article in the match programme, which told Anthony’s family’s story.
“Cardiff City fan, Anthony Boggis is taking on a huge challenge in June 2024 to raise awareness of and funds for the South Wales children’s hospice Tŷ Hafan. Over four days, Anthony joins a team of men who plan to cycle off-road, hike, and kayak the length of Wales, from Conwy to Sully near Barry.
The BikeBoatBoot challenge brings together Dads and Uncles who have been and are being supported by Tŷ Hafan. Tŷ Hafan supports families with children who have life-limiting illnesses. Sadly, many of the Dads taking part have lost children, including Anthony.
Anthony, Natalie, their daughter Carys and their son Rhys were all fanatical Bluebirds supporters, and season tickets holders. Rhys and his family were cared for by Tŷ Hafan, with respite stays and support in the community. The death of a son or daughter is devastating. The grief is like no other. Losing a child is against the natural order of life.
The BikeBoatBoot challenge gives Dads the opportunity to meet and talk. It is commonly reported that men do not talk enough, but training and taking on the four-day challenge allows this to happen naturally. Many of the Dads had never met before, but become close friends after taking on challenges like the BikeBoatBoot. Indeed, taking on the unique triathlon down the length of Wales is more about getting men together than it is about the challenge.
“I am taking on the challenge in memory of Rhys,” explained Anthony. “It is my way of thanking Tŷ Hafan for their care and support, especially in our darkest hour when Rhys passed away.”
